Lamego history

According to the author Pina Manique e Albuquerque cited for the historian Gonçalves da Costa (1977, P. 45, vol.1), the toponimum "Lamego” figure or ambro-ilírio Lam is composed in a radical, and the suffix aecus, revealer of a gentílico. Lamaecus was, therefore, the name of a possessor of deep an agrarian Hispanic-Roman, instituted in séc. III next to burgo that it was gone developing to the wheel of the castle… "

In remote times they had inhabited this region Lígures and Túrdulos that, in the fusing with the Iberians, had given Lusitanos. During the Roman presence, the region of Lamego was inhabited for the Coilarnos, as testified some archaeological findings as plough, estelas, lianas and other monuments. For the localization of the castle, only accessible for the west, everything leads to believe that there it had one I castrate.

Sancho I granted him letters of couto in 1191. Lamego was growing around two poles: Cathedral and Castle. In 1290, King Denis gave fair letter to town (Viterbo, 1962), arriving coming of Castile and Granada merchants, selling spices and Oriental fabrics.

During the 20th century. King Manuel gave it foral in 1514. During the 20th century. XVI is appointed Bishop of Lamego d. Manuel de Noronha, one of the most notable prelates of Lamego. Occupying the mitra for eighteen years, was dubbed "the great Builder" and it is with him that truly begins the worship of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.

In the 17th and 18th centuries begin to be constructed, in Lamego, the Manor, which is certainly not unconnected with the increase in the trade of fortified wine of the Douro and the protection given by the Marquis of Pombal with the creation of the demarcated Douro region and General Company of Agriculture of vineyards of the Alto Douro. In 1835, Lamego was the capital of district but would lose in favor of Viseu, by Decree of December of that year, created by the Minister of the Kingdom, Mouzinho de Albuquerque. In 1919, with the royalist restoration attempt, Lamego's new headquarters, District capital ephemeral for only twenty-four days (Almeida, 1968).

In the second half of the 19th century, under the chairmanship of Visconde Guedes Teixeira, Lamego knows the way of modernization with the opening of new avenues, still today considered the most important of the city.  Already after the deployment of the Republic and under the chairmanship of Alfredo de Sousa, Lamego met new outbreak of development, being at that time covered the river Coura, which until then was discovered by downtown.Lamego is an important and compelling historical and cultural centre of the Douro, and so we invite you for a rendezvous with history.Foto: História Lamego
